We logged one Rotterdam-bound Kakobuy parcel line by line — CNY conversion, China domestic shipping, payment fee, volumetric weight, freight, duty and Dutch VAT. The goods were only about half the door-to-door total.

Editor score 4.0 / 5

A first Kakobuy order is cheap or expensive depending on where you stop counting. Stop at the item price and you are reading a fantasy; count to the door and you get the only number that matters. We logged one parcel end to end — four items from three Taobao and Weidian sellers, consolidated into a single box and delivered to a Rotterdam address — and wrote down every line between the CNY figure on the listing and the amount that actually left our account.

The result surprised us. On the cheaper-looking shipping line, the goods were 43% of the door-to-door total. On the tariffless line, 50%. More than half of what a first parcel costs happens after you click pay for the item.

The parcel, line by line

The basket: two graphic tees at ¥28 each, one fleece hoodie at ¥168, one low-top sneaker at ¥329. Goods subtotal ¥553. Three sellers, three separate domestic deliveries to the warehouse.

Three details deserve a hard look. First, the conversion rate: mid-market sat at roughly ¥1 = €0.1197 the hour we paid, so the agent's spread cost us €2.66 on the goods alone — invisible, and it scales with basket size. Second, volumetric weight beat the scale by 0.7 kg, because three items arrived in three retail boxes that the consolidation then packed into one larger carton. Third, line 11 is not a premium: the tariffless line was €22.26 cheaper at the door than the line with the lower headline rate, because it absorbed the duty, the VAT and the €10 handling fee. Publishing a per-kg rate without stating what it includes is how people misjudge their first order.

What the same basket costs in Rotterdam

Four comparable items at Dutch retail — two graphic tees at €34.99, a fleece hoodie at €109.99, low-top sneakers at €119.99 — come to €299.95 with VAT already inside the price and delivery free. Our parcel landed at €136.85, or roughly 46% of that, and at €159.11 on the economy line, roughly 53%. That is a real saving. It is also a saving that only exists because four items shared one box.

The single-item trap

Price one tee on its own. Item €3.49, domestic China shipping €1.00, payment fee €0.13. The line's minimum chargeable weight is 0.5 kg, so freight is €5.91 whatever the tee weighs. One tariff group means €3.00 duty. VAT on €12.40 is €2.60. The handling fee is still €10.00. Total: €26.13 against €34.99 at retail — €8.86 saved, three weeks of waiting, and no returns counter to walk into. That is the honest answer to whether a first Kakobuy order is cheap: not on one item, and comfortably yes on a consolidated basket.

Every rate here is already stale

Treat the table above as a method, not a price list. Freight per-kg rates move with fuel, capacity and season; agents restructure lines and their volumetric divisors; commission schedules and first-order credits change without notice; exchange rates drift daily; and the Dutch duty and VAT treatment of low-value consignments is still being revised at EU level. A figure quoted for a first parcel last quarter can be wrong today by a fifth. Re-run every line at the live checkout, on the day you pay, for your destination.

The three levers that actually move the total

  1. Consolidate into one parcel. The €10 handling fee, the €3-per-group duty and the minimum chargeable weight are levied per parcel, not per item. Our four items split one €10 fee; the lone tee carried the whole €10 itself.
  2. Strip retail packaging. Rebuilding the carton at 38 × 28 × 16 cm drops volumetric weight to 2.13 kg, so the 2.60 kg scale reading wins and the chargeable weight falls to 3.0 kg. On the economy line that is €41.40 → €35.48 of freight, plus about €1.24 of VAT: a little over €7 saved by removing a sneaker box and two poly mailers.
  3. Pick a slower line — then check what it includes. Speed is the wrong axis. Compare landed totals, not per-kg rates, and confirm whether clearance sits inside the price. Our slower-looking tariffless route won by €22.26 and produced no door bill at all.

Price a real basket before you commit

The tee in this basket is in the product catalog as the Nike Classic Logo Printed T-Shirt (SKU 7715836021) at $3.88, alongside the hoodie and footwear shapes we priced. Build a four-to-six item basket there, run it through the worksheet above, and the answer to "is this actually cheap?" arrives before your money leaves, not three weeks later at the door.

Is a first Kakobuy order actually cheaper than buying the same item in the Netherlands?

On one item, barely. A single tee landed at €26.13 against €34.99 at Dutch retail, because the line's minimum chargeable weight, the €3 duty, 21% VAT and a €10 clearance fee are all charged per parcel. Consolidate four to six items into one box and the same fixed costs spread thin: our four-item parcel landed at €136.85, about 46% of retail.

My parcel weighed 2.6 kg but I was charged for 3.5 kg. Why?

Volumetric weight. Most Europe lines bill the greater of the scale reading and length × width × height in centimetres divided by a set divisor, commonly 6,000 or 8,000. Our carton measured 40 × 30 × 22 cm, which is 26,400 cm³ ÷ 8,000 = 3.30 kg, rounded up to 3.50 kg. Stripping retail boxes shrank the carton and sent the chargeable weight back down to 3.0 kg.

Are tariffless Europe lines really cheaper than paying Dutch VAT at the door?

Often yes, even though the headline rate looks higher. Our tariffless line quoted ¥145/kg against ¥95/kg for economy air, yet landed €22.26 cheaper because clearance, duty and the carrier handling fee were inside the price. Always compare landed totals and confirm in writing what a line includes before paying.
